I’m very excited to have John Lee Dumas featured on BloggingTips’ “Meet the Bloggers” interview today, not only because he’s extremely successful, but he also has a one of the top business / entrepreneur podcasts on iTunes, which is called “Entrepreneur on Fire – with John Lee Dumas”. 1.) Please tell us about yourself and how you got into blogging?
John Lee Dumas, Founder and Host of EntrepreneurOnFire, a daily podcast that interviews today’s most successful and inspiring entrepreneurs. We started the blog over at EntrepreneurOnFire.com after my partner, Kate Erickson, came on board as the Content and Community Manager (May 2013).
At the time, the podcast had been live for just about seven months, and I knew it was time to expand our reach and start utilizing other mediums to share valuable tips, tools and tactics to help others who were looking to take their own entrepreneurial leap.
Kate is the author of our blog, which publishes twice a week, and you’ll also see a post from me every now and then.
2.) What is the focus of your blog and why did you choose that niche?
The focus of the blog is to help wantrepeneurs, entrepreneurs and small business owners who are just starting out on their own entrepreneurial journeys navigate the unknown waters of starting and building their own business. We share tips, tools and tactics to help them save time, avoid the mistakes we’ve already made and hopefully find ways duplicate our successes.
3.) How are you currently monetizing your blog traffic?
We do not advertise on the blog with adsense or paid ads. We do include affiliate links from time to time in our posts, and we also discuss the benefits of our online communities if the topic of the post permits.
4.) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started blogging?
I wish we would have know that our audience for the podcast is not the exact same audience for our blog. We spent a lot of time testing content and writing in-depth posts that we thought our podcast listeners would be interested in. We’ve found over time that a lot of our blog readers aren’t necessarily our podcast listeners and that they are interested in different types of content.

6.) Can you give us three recommended tools/services that you use with your blogging?
Flare is the social sharing tool that we use and we love it. It looks good on the site and works great on desktop and mobile!
Yoast WordPress SEO plugin, which is an easy way to help ensure your posts are optimized and that your keywords are set.
Akismet, which helps protect your blog from comment and trackback spam
7.) What advice would you have for someone who is just starting with their first blog?
Really have your avatar nailed down and know exactly what type of content they’re looking for. Whether you join an online group or community where your avatar is hanging out, or you ask them via social media, really focus in on delivering the content that will add the most value to them.
If you’re not sure what that content is, then just ask (or listen) in the online communities you’re a part of. What is your avatar’s pain point and how can you help solve that via your content?
8.) What’s the best advice or tip you’ve discovered about blogging since getting started?
Again, to just really listen to your audience. Ask them what their pain points are and what they need help with, and then find a way to deliver that content to them via your posts.
9.) If you only had $100 to start a new blog, how would you use it?
I would invest it in any tools necessary to get a Client Relationship Management (CRM) account and an opt-in up on the blog. Then, I would use that opt-in to start building an email list so that I could stay in touch with my readers on a regular basis and continue to deliver valuable content to them both on and off the site.
