Study: Facebook drives 24 percent of mobile referrals

A new study on mobile referrals by Quantcast shows that Facebook leads more traffic on mobile to media sites than any other social network — by a wide margin. Quantcast analyzed the top 250 news and entertainment websites over a year period, ending with January 2014, and determined where their mobile traffic comes from.

Facebook was the biggest referral site, at 24 percent, with Twitter trailing at 7 percent.

Quantcast blogged about Facebook’s power as a referral source on mobile:

Largely because of Facebook’s growth as a content aggregator on mobile, social media has surpassed search as the leading source of mobile referrals to news and entertainment publishers. Recent efforts from Facebook, including Paper and FB Newswire, demonstrate Facebook’s commitment to maintaining that lead. When Google Reader was shut down last year, many users were left wondering where they would turn for their daily news fix. Google may have hoped it would be Google Plus. Unfortunately for Google, the answer appears to be Facebook.

Quantcast also found that Facebook was the industry leader in iOS pageviews from third-party browsers.
