Is Digital Marketing An Effective Political Tool?

Is Digital Marketing An Effective Political Tool? image Politics on the web

When I was at SocialVibe, we had an entire portion of our business devoted to promoting political messages. Politicians would use our value exchange platform as a tool to get their ads in front of a targeted audience. And the results were extraordinary

A couple of weeks ago, President Obama urged the youth of America to sign up for Obamacare.

Interestingly, he did it by appearing on a web-only, Funny or Die comedy sketch series called “Between Two Ferns with Zack Galifianakis.”

The positive results of the plug are an indication that digital and social media marketing are impactful tools for influencing voters and making a political statement.

But I don’t think that it stops there.

Before Ellen broke Twitter last month during the Oscars, the most retweeted image of all time had been Obama’s post after successfully winning re-election.

And we all experienced first-hand how Obama used social media to engage voters when he was campaigning for President the first time around in 2008.

Furthermore, I am sure many of your friends express their political views on their various feeds.

I even lost a friend on Facebook who was so upset when Obama was re-elected that he became insulting and abusive to anyone who had voted for him.

Thankfully, that has only happened once, but it is a clear indicator that politics are alive and well on social media!

So, what exactly does this mean?

I think it means that politics is marketing just like any other field except with much more passionate brand loyalists.

I mean, when was the last time you lost a Facebook friend over the battle between Pepsi and Coke?

And politicians would be smart to view digital and social media marketing as a key ingredient in their marketing plans.

They are, by far, the most engaging, interactive and targeted forms of marketing that any brand can utilize.
