With that, welcome to our weekly blog series on getting that marketing job you’ve always wanted. Each week we will discuss a new tip or technique you can use to land that job you’re after. This week’s topic = First Day at the New Job
It’s been a long, rewarding journey. You got offered the job you were after and felt comfortable enough to accept it. And so, the long-awaited first day is here. But this isn’t the end.
The first day on the new job is just another step in the process. And it’s as important to your own development as it is to the company who hired you. Because it’s the beginning of a period where you both will be trying to confirm that you made the right choice.
So what can you do on day one to help solidify your position and get off on the right foot? The goal is to learn.
- Learn everyone’s name. Shake their hand, introduce yourself, let them know that you’re the new (insert position) and that you’re excited to be working with them.
- Learn everyone’s role. When you meet the people you will be working with, get a sense for what they do, not just their title. This will help you when it comes time to tackling your first projects, and could let you know who you can go to for help.
- Learn about ongoing projects. What is going on in the company as you come on board? What are people working on? What are some existing deadlines?
- Learn about the company’s most important metrics. What does success look like? How can you measure your own contributions to that success?
Truth be told, this is not a one day process. In most positions, it can take upwards of a month to get the full picture of what is happening and who is involved. But it’s important that you spend your first few days learning as much as you can about your new company. Ask lots of questions, do your own research, take things home with you.
The more you learn initially, the more you’ll be able to help out. The best way to hit the ground running and add to the team is to know how things work and why.
