Facebook to enlarge images in sidebar ads

NewSidebarAds

As advertisers flock to the News Feed and often eschew the right sidebar, the value has declined for many cases. Facebook looks to rectify that by making images in the sidebar ads bigger, the company announced Wednesday.

According to Facebook, these sidebar ad images will use the same proportions as desktop News Feed ads, they will be larger than past sidebar ads, and there will be fewer of them.

Facebook announced this in a blog post:

The new look of the ads, along with their new distribution, is intended to offer a better ad experience on Facebook. In early tests we’ve seen increased engagement — up to 3X more — from people seeing the new design.

Because the updated ads mirror the overall shape of desktop News Feed ads, marketers will no longer have to choose separate images for News Feed and right-hand column placements. They can now use the same image for both.

Some advertisers will be able to take advantage of this later this month, with a full rollout coming later this year. For now, Facebook will support both old and new sidebar image formats.

Readers: Do you think this will help make the sidebar more valuable?
